OUR EYES LOOK TO THE LORD OUR GOD

Proclamation:
“As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to The Lord our God, till He shows us His mercy.”  Psalm 123:2 (NIV)

Explanation:
The words of this psalm were written under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  Bible scholars do not agree on who was the human author.  This is another psalm of ascent, one of the songs which the children of Israel sang as they came out of captivity in Babylon.  As they journeyed towards Jerusalem, they lifted up their eyes to The Lord God in heaven. (Psalm 123:1)  Many believe that this referred not only to their physical eyes, as they could see Jerusalem in the hills in the distance, but to the eyes of their mind and heart to The Spirit of God to whom they looked for understanding, help, salvation, and mercy.  Although they had been freed from captivity, they looked to The Lord as a slave looks to his master for mercy.

Application:
We look to The Lord God for direction, protection, help, and provisions.  Not because we deserve it, but because we belong to Him and without His mercy we cannot make it.  In our weakness we look to His strength.  We are like empty clay vessels before a never ending source of living water, we are waiting to be filled.  In due time, when He is ready, He will bless us.  We are just to humbly pray and ask Him, and then wait upon Him. (Luke 18:1-5)  When we look to The Lord our God, we have hope for better days to come.
