"I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because The LORD sustains me." Psalms 3:5 (NIV)
This psalm of David was written while he was running away from his son Absalon. He was running for his life, hiding in fear of his son. David prayed to God and was able to relax and sleep under some very difficult circumstances because The Lord was sustaining him.
Today, a lot of people have difficulty sleeping. We have trouble falling asleep because we are worried about things that we cannot control. We need to pray and turn our problems over to God. Then we can relax in The Lord and sleep because God is taking care of our problem and sustaining us.
Only The Lord can grant us a peaceful sleep in the midst of our troubles. The Lord watches over us all night while we sleep. He wakes us up each morning and then He watches over us all day long. It is The Lord who sustains us, He allows us to keep on breathing and allows our heart to keep on beating. Thanks be to God for a good night's sleep and for waking us up each morning.
