"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior ..." Psalms 42:5 (NIV)
The words of this psalm were recorded under the direction of The Holy Spirit of God by the Sons of Korah. They were written to encourage believers who, because of personal situations and bad times, had become depressed and sorrowful. These words were written to remind them to praise The Lord God at all times, good and bad.
Believers are reminded not to let the events of this world get us down. We may not understand why things happen to us, but we should praise The Lord at all times. (Psalms 34:1) Only He can comfort the truly downcast, disturbed, despondent, and depressed. (2 Corinthians 7:6) We should consider all of our trials and tribulations as preparation for better things to come, and therefore count them all as joy. (James 1:2-3) We selfishly want to hold on to loved ones who are better off in a better place. (2 Corinthians 5:8) As believers we should praise God for the time that we had with our loved ones, and for what we learned from them.
