"Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, 'Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?' 'Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,' Elisha replied. 'You have asked a difficult thing,' Elijah said, 'yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours, otherwise not.' As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind." 2 Kings 2:8-11 ((NIV)
The unknown author of the books of first and second Kings records the final events in the life of the prophet Elijah and his ascension into heaven without dying. The prophet Elisha, the disciple of Elijah, asked for a double portion of the spirit of Elijah when Elijah was taken from him, and The Lord granted his request.
The Lord shares some of His power with men of faith who are doing His work. Elijah was clearly a man of God and he was able to call upon the power of God. Elisha was also a man of God and he received a double portion of Elijah's spirit and was also able to call upon the power of God. God allow both men to part the waters and cross on dry land as He had allow Moses to part the Rea Sea. Both men used the power of God to destroy those who disrespected them. (2 Kings 1:9-12 & 2 Kings 2:23-24) Respect The Lord God and respect the man of God who is doing The Lord's work. There is power in the words of the man of God because God shares His power with him. Again I say, be very careful how you approach, speak to, and treat the man of God, because you do not want to incur the wrath of God.
