"And this is love: that we walk in obedience to His commands. As you have heard from the beginning, His command is that you walk in love. Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the Antichrist ... Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work." 2 John 1:6-11 (NIV)
In the past itinerant preachers and teachers would survive based upon the hospitality of the believers. Here John is warning them and us not to help, or welcome into our homes, those who would teach against Christ. This is not to speak against helping the unsaved non-Christians, or against having them into you home. We should not help or associate those who teach an anti-Christian doctrine. It is okay to have discussions with people who have different opinions or beliefs, but we should avoid those that actively teach against The Word of God.
How can two walk together unless they agree? (Amos 3:3) Loving your enemy does not mean following his teachings. We should read and study the Bible for ourselves (2 Timothy 2:15) so that we recognize false teaching when we hear it.
