PROCLAMATION
“But Jehosheba, the daughter of King
Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from
among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his
nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.” 2 Kings 11:2 (KJV)
EXPLANATION
These words were written under the
influence of The Holy Spirit of God. The
human author is unknown although some Bible scholars attribute this book to the
prophet Jeremiah. When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son
was dead, she got up and destroyed all of the royal seed. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram and
sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and hid him in the nurses
chamber so he was not slain. They hid
him in the house from Athaliah for six years. (2 Kings 11:1-3) In the seventh year, Jehoiada the priest
called the leaders and the captains of the guard and made a covenant with them
to protect the king’s son and guard him at all times wherever he goes. Then they brought him forth and put a crown
upon him and anointed him king. They
clapped and cheered and shouted, “God save the king.” (2 Kings 11:4-12) Athaliah heard the noise, went to investigate
it and saw Joash the king and trumpeters by him. As the people rejoiced, she tore her clothes
and cried, “Treason” for she had reigned for seven years. Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of
the guard and the officers of the army to follow her and kill her but only
after she was outside of the house of The Lord. (2 Kings 11:13-16) They slew Athaliah with a sword beside the
king’s house. The priest made a covenant
between The Lord and the king and the people that they would be The Lord’s
people. Then the people went and tore
down the house of Baal. They broke all
of the images of Baal and the altars. They killed Mattan the priest of Baal and the
people of the land rejoiced. Jehoash was
seven years old when he began to reign as king. (2 Kings 11:17-21)
APPLICATION
There is an old saying which goes, “God takes care of
children and fools.” (Psalm 68:5 and Psalm 116:6) And there is another similar one which says,
“I am now old and wise because God took care of me when I was young and dumb.” The point here is that even the very young
children are afforded God’s protection.
The older sister, a nurse, and a priest all provided protection for the
young boy who would be king. God can use
grown people to protect young children.
As an adult, we may be used as some child’s guardian angel. The Lord God can use us to be a blessing to a
child.
