"In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." Hebrews 5:12-14 (NIV)
Here the unknown author of Hebrews is telling the believers that by now they ought to be seasoned and knowledgeable enough that they should be teachers. However, instead they still need to be taught the basic principals of the Word of God.
Today there are a number of people who have been attending church services for years and still know very little about the Word of God. They have heard a number of Bible stories, but they have no idea how the stories apply to their lives today. After being a Christian for years they are still babes in Christ. There are "take home points" to be learned from every Bible story and these learned lessons are to be applied to our lives. When we hear or read the Bible we should do so with purpose, to learn something that we can apply to our lives.
