DO NOT BECOME UNEQUALLY YOKED

Proclamation

“And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, ‘I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines; Now therefore get her for me to wife.’  Then his father and his mother said unto him, ‘Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?’ …”  Judges 14:2-3 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  The Lord God blessed Samson and he grew. (Judges 13:24)  When he was grown he went to the town of Timnah and saw a Philistine woman who caught his attention and he wanted her for his wife.  He told his parents to get her for him but they were reluctant to do so because she was not one of them. (Judges 14:1-3)  Samson prevailed upon his parents and they went with him to Timnah.  As they neared the vineyards of Timnah a young lion attacked Samson.  The Spirit of The Lord came mightily upon him and Samson tore the lion apart with his bare hands. (Judges 14:5-6)  Some time later he went back to marry the woman.  On the way he came across the carcass of the lion and noticed a swarm of bees on the carcass and it was full of honey.  He scooped some of the honey out with his hands and ate it as he went along his journey.  He also gave some of the honey to his parents but he did not tell them where it came from. (Judges 14:8-9)  When he arrived in Timnah he held a marriage feast as was the custom for young men.  The people chose thirty young men to be his wedding companions.  Samson presented a riddle to the men and wagered thirty sets of clothing.  They could not solve the riddle so they threatened Samson’s wife to get him to explain the riddle to her so she could tell them, or they would burn down her father’s house. (Judges 14:10-15)  She cried and pleaded with him until he explained the riddle to her.  She in turn went and explained it to her people.  When they came to Samson with the answer to the riddle he knew that they had pried the answer out of his wife but he kept his end of the wager.  The Spirit of The Lord came upon him and he went down to Ashkelon.  There he slew thirty men, stripped them of their clothing, and gave them to the men who had explained the riddle.  While he was gone, Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions who had attended the wedding feast. (Judges 14:16-20)

Application

The Bible teaches us that as believers we should not be “… unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” (2 Corinthians 6:14)  Those who have different beliefs may also have different loyalties.  They may attempt to persuade you to violate your beliefs and do unrighteous behaviors, or just be unkind and disrespectful to you.  Fellowship with like-minded individuals.

THE BIRTH OF SAMSON

Proclamation

“And the angel of The Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, ‘Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.’ ”  Judges 13:3 (KJV)

Explanation

After the death of the judges the Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 13:1)  An angel of The Lord appeared to the barren wife of Manoah of Zorah and told her that she would bare a son.  She was told not to let him drink wine and not to cut his hair for he was to be a Nazarite, dedicated to God from the womb. (Judges 13:2-5)  The woman went and told her husband what had transpired and he prayed that the angel would reappear and teach them how to bring up the boy.  The angel later reappeared and spoke with them. (Judges 13:6-14)  Manoah then asked the angel to stay a while longer with them.  He refused to eat any of their food but told them to prepare a burnt offering unto The Lord.  When he prepared the burnt offering the angel ascended to heaven in the flame. (Judges 13:15-20)  Later the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson.  As he grew The Lord blessed him. (Judges 13:24-25)

Application

Things which are difficult or impossible for man are not a problem for God.  With the help of The Lord God, the lame can walk, the blind can see, the deaf can hear, the sick are healed, (Matthew 11:5 and Luke 7:22) and the barren can bear children. (Genesis 17:15-16, Genesis 30:22-23, and Judges 13:3-24)   All things are possible with God, and He can do all things for us if we only believe. (Matthew 19:26 and Mark 9:23)

ENVY LEADS TO FIGHTING

Proclamation

“And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, ‘Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee?  We will burn thine house upon thee with fire.”  Judges 12:1 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After Jephthah had defeated the Ammonites he was confronted by the men of Ephraim who wanted to know why he did not call them to help him.  In an obvious rage of envy they threatened to burn down his house with him inside of it. (Judges 12:1)  Jephthah responded saying that he did call them but they did not come to help him so he went on without them and God gave him the victory.  Then he asked them why they wanted to fight with him. (Judges 12:2-3)  The men of Ephraim called the men of Gilead fugitives saying they fled from Ephraim.  Jephthah led the men of Gilead against the Ephraimites and killed forty-two thousand of them. (Judges 12:4-6)  Jephthah led Israel for six years and after he died, Ibzan led Israel.  After Ibzan died Elon led Israel for ten years then he died.  After Elon died Abdon led Israel for eight years and then he died. (Judges 12:8-15)

Application

Today we use the term “friend” very loosely.  We call someone a friend when we really should say that they are an acquaintance or an associate, a classmate, a colleague, or a coworker.  Just because you work together does not make you friends.  When someone who is supposed to be our friend gets upset because of our accomplishments did not include or benefit them, the “friendship” can be ruined.  We are not supposed to covet that which is someone else’s.  We are the share in one another’s joy, and with tender sympathy bear one another’s sorrows.  It is one thing to be upset because you were not called.  It is something else entirely when being left out leads to a fight.  Everyone that we associate with does not have our best interest at heart.  We should pray to God for discernment in order to know who are our real friends.

JEPHTHAH VOWED UNTO THE LORD

Proclamation

“Then The Spirit of The Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh … he passed over unto the children of Ammon.  And Jephthah vowed a vow unto The Lord …”  Judges 11:29-30 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Jair of Gilead, who led and judged Israel for twenty-two years, the Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord and He allowed the Philistines and the Ammonites to oppress them for eighteen years. (Judges 10:1-8)  Then the Israelites cried out to The Lord but He told them to cry out to the gods they were serving. (Judges 10:10-14)  During that time Jephthah was a mighty warrior. He was the son of Gilead and a prostitute.  When the sons of Gilead’s wife were grown, they drove Jephthah out of town and denied him any of the inheritance of his father. (Judges 11:1-3)  Some time later while Israel was at war with the Ammonites, the elders sought out Jephthah and asked him to be their commander.  He refused and reminded them that they had driven him out of town.  The elders agreed to follow him if he would return and lead them, and he eventually went with them. (Judges 11:4-11)  After exchanging messages with the king of Ammon and then being ignored, Jephthah advanced against the Ammonites. (Judges 11:12-29)  Then he made a vow unto The Lord that if He delivered the Ammonites into his hands, then he would offer as a sacrificial offering what ever came out of his house to meet him when he returned home in triumph. (Judges 11:30-31)  Jephthah fought the Ammonites and The Lord gave them into his hands.  After Israel subdued Ammon, Jephthah returned to his home and his virgin daughter, his only child, was first to come out of his house to greet him.  He gave her the two months she requested to say goodbye to her friends, then he sacrificed her as he had vowed to The Lord. (Judges 11:32-40)

Application

We should be very careful with respect to what we promise The Lord God that we will do if He comes through for us as we requested.  Usually we are being very selfish when we ask God for something, and the promises that we make are our way of showing Him exactly how serious we are in our request.  The problem is that when we get what we asked for from Him we generally break our promise to Him.  He never breaks His promises to us but we frequently break our promises to Him.  Let us be faithful and keep our promises to God.

AND AGAIN THEY DID EVIL IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD

Proclamation

“And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of The Lord, and served Baalim and Ashtaroth and the gods of Syria, and … Zidon, and … Moab, and … Ammon, and … Philistines, and forsook The Lord and served not Him.  And the anger of The Lord was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.”  Judges 10:6-7 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Abimelech, The Lord God rose up Tola the son of Puah to judge and deliver Israel.  He led Israel for twenty-three years.  When he died he was followed by Jair of Gilead who led and judged Israel for twenty-two years before he died.  The Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord and He allowed the Philistines and the Ammonites to oppress them for eighteen years. (Judges 10:1-8)  Then The Israelites cried out to The Lord but He told them to cry out to the gods they were serving. (Judges 10:10-14)

Application

Sometimes it is possible to push good people to far and they will turn on you.  The Lord God is much more patient than any person but He has His limits as to how much He will take from His people.  This is an example of the fact that it is possible to cross the line and cause God to withhold blessing from us and allow us to suffer because of our actions.  When we turn away from God there is a price we will have to pay.  Just as disobedient children still belong to their parents when they do wrong, the relationship is not broken by the wrongdoing or the spanking that follows.  As believers we do not lose our salvation when we fall into sin, the relationship with God remains intact but we just damage the fellowship and lose the joy. (Psalm 51:12)  We need to ask God to blot out our sins, create in us a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within us. (Psalm 51:9-10)

GOD AVENGES WICKEDNESS

Proclamation

“Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren; And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads; And upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.”  Judges 9:56-57 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the Israelites subdued the Midianites there was peace in the land for forty years. (Judges 8:28)  During his lifetime Gideon had many wives and seventy sons.  He also had a son by his concubine whom he named Abimelech.  Gideon lived to be “a good old age” and when he died the Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 8:30-34)  The Israelites did not show any respect for Abimelech or any of his brothers (Judges 8:35) so he went to his mother’s clan in Shechem and they supported him.  Then he returned to his home in Ophrah and murdered all seventy of his brothers except the youngest one Jotham who escaped by hiding.  When the people of Shechem learned what he had done they made him their king.  (Judges 9:1-6)  Jotham cursed the people of Shechem when he learned that they had made him king. (Judges 9:7-21)  As the only heir to the throne Abimelech accepted the seat that his father Gideon (called Jerubbaal) had refused and he ruled Israel for three years.  Soon the people of Shechem turned on him and Abimelech led the army of Israel against them and defeated them.  The citizens of Shechem went into a tower which Abimelech burned down with the people still inside. (Judges 9:22-49)  Then he went to the city of Thebez and captured it.  The people there fled into a tower and went up to the roof.  As Abimelech approached the tower to burn it down, a woman dropped a millstone on him which struck his head and cracked his skull.  He quickly asked his armor-bearer to slay him with his sword so it could not be said that a woman killed him. (Judges 9:50-54)  When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead they returned home. (Judges 9:55)  God repaid Abimelech for murdering his seventy brothers, and repaid the people of Shechem for all of their wickedness. (Judges 9:24 and 9:56-57)

Application

There is an old saying that “God don’t like ugly” referring to the evil in one’s heart and their behavior, not to their physical appearance.  The Lord God will deal with those who perpetrate evil upon others.  Wrongly spilled blood cries out to Him. (Genesis 4:8-10)  “Avenge not yourselves … For it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,’ saith The Lord.” (Romans 12:19)  Evildoers may appear to have gotten away with their evil deeds but The Lord will cut them off. (Psalm 37:1-2 and 7-10)  God will avenge all of the wickedness done to His people.

DO NOT WORSHIP THINGS

Proclamation

“And Gideon said unto them, ‘I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey’ … And they answered, ‘We will willingly give them’ … the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold … And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah; and all Israel went thither a whoring after it; which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.”  Judges 8:24-27 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the Israelites captured the leaders of the Midianite armies, Oreb and Seeb, and killed them (Judges 7:15-25) Gideon was questioned by the men of Ephraim as to why he had not called them to help him. (Judges 8:1)  He gave them an ego stroking answer which pacified them.  Then he went on over the Jordan river pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna the kings of the Midianites. (Judges 8:2-4)  When he and his three hundred men got to Succoth, he asked them for bread to feed his men and they refused him.  Gideon responded by telling them that after he caught the kings of Midian he would return and deal with them. (Judges 8:5-7)  He continued on to Penuel and asked the men there for bread and they also refused him.  He told also told them that after he caught the kings of Midian that he would return to deal with them. (Judges 8:8-9)  When Gideon caught Zebah and Zalmunna and they admitted killing his brothers, he killed them. (Judges 8:10-21)  Afterwards, the Israelites wanted to make him their king but Gideon refused.  He asked instead that they give him the gold earrings from the plunder they had collected.  Then he had the golden earrings made into an ephod and put it on public display in his home city.  Unfortunately, the children of Israel began to worship the ephod. (Judges 8:22-27)

Application

It is not good to worship anything other than The Lord God, in fact it is sinful to do so.  Most people deny worshiping idol gods.  However, people put their cars, their homes, their family, or their grandchildren before God.  Some people will miss going to worship services on Sunday in order to go to brunch with their children, but they cannot get their children to attend worship services.  Some people will attend a sporting event on Sunday instead of going to a worship service.  Putting any material thing, person, or event before The Lord God is a sin.  The Lord God is jealous and He wants nothing put before Him. (Exodus 20:3 and Deuteronomy 5:7)

FOLLOW THE WORD OF THE LORD

Proclamation

“And it came to pass the same night, that The Lord said unto Gideon, ‘Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it unto thine hand’ … Then went he down to the host … when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped … he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers … and said … as I do, so shall ye do … and the three companies blew the trumpets, and break the pitchers … and cried, ‘The sword of The Lord and of Gideon.’  … the host ran, and cried, and fled … and set every man’s sword against his fellow … And the men of Israel … pursued after the Midianites … they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon …”  Judges 7:9-25 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Joshua and his generation of elders, the next generation did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 2:10-13)  Then The Lord God raised up a series of judges to deliver and judge the Israelites.  When each judge died, the children of Israel returned to their corrupt ways and did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 2:18-19)  The first judge of Israel was Othniel, the second was Ehud, the third was Deborah, and then there was Gideon. (Judges 6:11-16)  When he was called, Gideon did not believe that it was God who was talking to him so he asked for several signs to prove it. (Judges 6:17-40)  Afterwards, he gathered an army but The Lord God told him that he had too many men so he gradually reduced the number to 300 men. (Judges 7:1-8)  Gideon divided his men into three companies, sounded the trumpets, and the enemy turned on each other and some fled.  The Israelites captured the leaders of the Midianites, Oreb and Seeb, and killed them. (Judges 7:15-25)

Application

Gideon doubted that The Lord had chosen him (Judges 6:11-40) and he was afraid to attack the  enemy as God had commanded him (Judges 7:9-11) but he was obedient.  What we think is not important when it come to obeying The Word of God.  We need to obey His Word regardless of what we think.  If we are obedient, things will work out for our good. (Romans 8:28)  We do not have the capacity to understand His thoughts or His ways. (Isaiah 55:8-9)  Therefore we should not lean on our own thoughts or our understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)  We need to trust in The Lord. (Psalm 118:9 and Proverbs 3:5)  He is all knowing, all powerful, and everywhere all at the same time.

GOD SPOKE TO GIDEON AND CHOSE HIM

Proclamation

“And the angel of The Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, ‘The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.’ …  The Lord looked upon him and said, ‘Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites;  Have not I sent thee?’  And he said unto Him, ‘Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel?  Behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.’  And The Lord said unto him, ‘Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites …’ ”  Judges 6:12-16 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Joshua and his generation of elders the next generation did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 2:10-13)  God let them lose in battle and be plundered by their enemies.  Then The Lord God raised up a judge and He was with the judge and saved the Israelites from their enemies as long as the judge was alive.  However, when the judge died the children of Israel returned to their corrupt ways worshiping other gods. (Judges 2:18-19)  The first judge of Israel was Othniel, then there was Ehud, and after him there was Deborah.  Chapter five of the Bible Book of Judges records the song of praise that Deborah sang to The Lord after she won her battles. (Judges 5:1-31)  There was forty years of peace under Deborah. (Judges 5:31)  After she died the Israelites did evil in the sight of The Lord and He let them be subdued by the Midianites and oppressed for seven years. (Judges 6:1)  Then The Lord chose Gideon to deliver Israel and be their next judge. (Judges 6:11-16)  Gideon did not believe that it was God that was talking to him so he asked for several signs to prove it. (Judges 6:17-40)

Application

Years ago cartoons would depict a miniature version of a character dressed as a devil standing on one of his shoulders whispering in one ear, and a miniature angel whispering in the other ear, to represent the influences of good and evil on the character.  While not entirely accurate, that depiction is a good representation of what we deal with today.  We “hear voices” but we often listen to the wrong one.  We need to listen to the “still small voice.” (1 Kings 19:12)  Jesus said His sheep know His voice and follow Him. (John 10:4 and 10:27)  We need to read God’s Holly Word to know when He is speaking to us, and when He speaks to us we need to listen and obey.

HELP CAN COME FROM STRANGE PLACES

Proclamation

“Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber … And she … gave him drink, and covered him … Then Jael … took a nail … and took an hammer … and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary.  So he died.”  Judges 4:16-22 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Joshua and his generation of elders the next generation did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 2:10-13)  God let them lose in battle and be plundered by their enemies.  After the Israelites were subjected to the king of Mesopotamia for eight years, The Lord raised up Othniel to be their judge and deliverer. (Judges 3:7-10)  Othniel judged Israel for forty years.  When he died the Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord and He let Eglon king of Moab overpower them.  They were subjected to Eglon for eighteen years before God sent Ehud to judge and deliver them. (Judges 3:11-15)  After Ehud died the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of The Lord.  Then The Lord let them be subdued by Jabin king of Canaan for twenty years before He sent Deborah, a prophetess to judge and deliver them. (Judges 4:1-5)  She called Barak to command the army, told him what The Lord had commanded, but he would not go into battle unless she went with him, and so she did. (Judges 4:6-9)  Together Deborah and Barak and the Israelite army won many battles (Judges 4:10-16) but they had help killing Sisera the commander of Canaanite army from Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite. (Judges 4:17-24)

Application

All too often we think that we can handle things by ourselves only to later learn that we need help.  Our help comes from The Lord, (Psalm 121:2) and He can use whomever He wants to be the vehicle of our aid, friend or foe.  Here God uses Deborah the prophetess to help Barak defeat the Canaanites and deliver the children of Israel.  She was the messenger from The Lord and he would not go into battle without her. (Judges 4:8)  They defeated the Canaanite army but Sisera their commander fled on foot to a place he thought was a safe haven only to be killed there by a woman. (Judges 4:21)  The Bible is filled with examples of the people of God needing help.  Usually the help is needed to get them out of a situation that they got themselves into by being disobedient.  The same is true for us today.  We need to pray for God’s help.

GOD SENT JUDGES TO DELIVER HIS PEOPLE

Proclamation

“And when the children of Israel cried unto The Lord, The Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.”  Judges 3:9 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After the death of Joshua and his generation of elders, the next generation did evil in the sight of The Lord and worshiped the idol gods of the nations around them and this angered The Lord. (Judges 2:10-13)  God let them lose in battle and be plundered by their enemies.  The Israelites were soon in great distress and God raised up judges to save them. (Judges 2:14-16)  When The Lord raised up a judge He was with the judge and saved them from their enemies as long as the judge was alive.  However, when the judge died the children of Israel returned to their corrupt ways worshiping other gods. (Judges 2:18-19)  After the Israelites were subjected to the king of Mesopotamia for eight years, The Lord raised up Othniel, son of Kenaz who was Caleb’s younger brother, to be their judge and deliverer. (Judges 3:7-10)  Othniel judged Israel for forty years.  When he died the Israelites again did evil in the sight of The Lord and He let Eglon king of Moab over power them.  They were subjected to Eglon for eighteen years before God sent Ehud to judge and deliver them. (Judges 3:11-15)

Application

Unfortunately, most of us only do that which is right for a little while after we repent from our wrongdoings, then we return to our sinful ways.  And, just like the children of Israel, we repeat this pattern over and over again.  Thankfully, we serve a very forgiving God who takes us back time and time again after we mess up and confess.  We do not deserve His goodness, mercy, and grace which appear to be limitless.  If we do not change, at some point I am sure that our sincerity will be called into question.  Hopefully, on that fateful day, we will not hear Him say, “… I know you not … depart from Me, all ye workers of iniquity.” (Luke 13:27)  Since we are His people, and we are called by His name, let us humble ourselves and pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways while He still hears us. (2 Chronicles 7:14)  Let us sincerely pray for His help to change, and not just use vain repetitions of words we have heard prayed. (Matthew 6:7)  We also need to sincerely pray for one another for we all need help and the sincere prayer of the righteous is effective. (James 5:16)

THEY DID THAT WHICH WAS EVIL IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD

Proclamation

“And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, which knew not The Lord, nor yet the works which He had done for Israel.  And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of The Lord, and served Baals.”  Judges 2:10-11 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by the prophet Samuel under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, (Exodus 14:21-22) to the edge of the promise land. (Exodus 16:35)  Because of their lack of faith, that generation wandered in the wilderness for forty years until the adults all died. (Numbers 14:16)  Joshua then led their children, the next generation, across the flooded Jordan River into the promise land (Joshua 3:15-17) and through a series of victorious battles over the inhabitants of the promise land. (Joshua 12:1-24)  Then he divided the lands that they conquered among the tribes of Israel, (Joshua 13:8 to 19:51) and that generation served The Lord God.  Joshua died at the age of one hundred and ten.  The children of Israel continued to serve The Lord as long as the elders who were with Joshua and who outlived him were alive. (Joshua 24:31)  Having conquered the nations to the south and the north, the Israelites then waged war against the nations to the east and west.  They were successful in battle but they did not destroy the people or drive them out of the lands. (Judges 1:1-13 and 17-36)  When the elders of Joshua’s generation died off, the next generation did not know The Lord God or what He had done for their parents and grandparents.  This new generation of Israelites did not serve The Lord God as their ancestors had done, they did evil in the sight of The Lord. (Judges 2:10-13)

Application

It is our responsibility as believers to teach our children, the next generation, about The Lord God and all that He has done. (Leviticus 10:11, Deuteronomy 6:7, and Proverbs 22:6)  It is our job to raise up our children in the fear and admonition of The Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)  We should not only tell them about His ways, but we should be living examples of His Holy Word.  Our children should see in us that which we expect them to exemplify.  It is our job to train our children in the ways of The Lord. (Proverbs 22:6)  If we do not teach them the ways of The Lord God, then we should not be surprised when they stray from Him and begin to follow the world and do that which is evil in His sight.

GOING FORTH FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY

Proclamation

“Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising sun, from the river Arnon into Mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east … all the kings thirty-one.”  Joshua 12:1-24 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  In this twelfth chapter, Joshua records the kings, and the land over which they reigned, which the Israelites were victorious over. (Joshua 12:7-24)  Beginning with Jericho, Joshua and the Israelites were victorious over the kings of thirty-one lands. (Joshua 12:24)  As the Israelites conquered these lands in succession, they went from victory to victory to victory.

Application

It is easy for us to be negative and to focus upon the bad times, and on our losses.  However, some of our losses were to teach us a lesson, (2 Corinthians 12:7) or they were our punishment for our disobedience. (Joshua 7:2-5 and 7:12)  The Lord God has promised us the victory through Jesus, The Christ. (1 Corinthian 15:57)  All we have to do is believe in Him and obey His Holy Word, and we will be victorious.  When The Lord God is with us, our enemies will not be able to stand against us. (Joshua 1:5)  He will fight our battles for us. (2 Chronicles 32:8)  If The Lord God is with us, who can stand against us? (Romans 8:31)  We will be victorious if we do all things His way.  If we believe and pray; trust and have faith in Him; read, study, and live by The Holy Word, then we will enjoy victory after victory, in this life and the next one.  The Lord God is omnipotent!  He already has the victory. (1 Chronicles 29:11, Psalm 98:1 and Isaiah 25:8) As believers we are born again, and whatsoever is born of God can overcome the world, and that is the victory. (1 John 5:4)

FOLLOW THE WORD OF GOD COMPLETELY

PROCLAMATION

“And The Lord said unto Joshua, ‘Be not afraid because of them; for tomorrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel; Thou shall hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.’  So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them … and they fell upon them.  And The Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel … And Joshua did unto them as The Lord bade him …”  Joshua 11:6-9 (KJV)

EXPLANATION

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  When Jabin, king of Hazor in the north, heard what Joshua and Israel had done to the southern kingdoms, he sent word to all of the kings of the northern kingdoms to join him against Israel. (Joshua 11:1-5)  The Lord God told Joshua not to be afraid because He was going to deliver them all into his hand.  So Joshua and his men of war attacked and defeated the armies of the northern kingdoms who had come against them.  He utterly destroyed them as The Lord had told him to do. (Joshua 11:6-9)  Then he proceeded to destroy all of the other cities to the north and all of the people therein.  The Israelites took all of the spoils of the cities and their cattle but they did not spare any of the people. (Joshua 11:10-14)  Joshua took control of all of the land that The Lord had promised Moses, and he gave it to Israel as an inheritance according to their tribal divisions and the land had rest from war. (Joshua 11:15-23)

APPLICATION

Joshua followed the directions which The Lord God had given to him.  He did not deviate from them at all.  Unfortunately for us, today many believers follow only parts of God’s Holy Word and only some of His commands.  We want Him to bless us but we do not want to obey His Word.  Jesus, The Christ, said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)  He said, “… he that keeps My commandments loves Me and shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.” (John 14:21)  The Lord does not want us to be halfheartedly for Him.  He wants nothing to do those who are “lukewarm” towards Him. (Revelation 3:16)  It is time for us to go “all in” and love Him with all of our heart, soul and mind. (Matthew 22:37, Mark 12:30, and Luke 10:27)

THE DAY THE SUN STOOD STILL

Proclamation

“Then spake Joshua to The Lord in the day when The Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, ‘Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.’  And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies … And there was no day like that before it or after it …”  Joshua 10:12-14 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After hearing about what the Israelites had done to Jericho and Ai, all of the kings west of the Jordan joined forces to wage war against Israel.  However, the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel. (Joshua 10:1-5)  After Gibeon was attacked, Joshua and his men of war went to the aid of the Gibeonites.  They slaughtered a large number of their enemies but a lot of them fled and they chased them. (Joshua 10:6-10)  The Lord God rained down large hailstones from heaven on the five armies of the Amorites and killed more men with hail than Joshua and the Israelites did with swords. (Joshua 10:11)  However, in order to completely defeat all five armies, Joshua prayed that the sun would stand still until they had totally annihilated their enemy.  The Lord God caused the sun to stop and stay in the middle of the sky for about a full day. (Joshua 10:12-14)  While the fighting was going on, the five kings hid in a cave.  When Joshua learned of this he had the cave sealed until they had defeated their armies.  When all of the fighting was done, Joshua brought the kings out of the cave, killed them, hanged them from five trees for a day.  Then threw their bodies into the cave where they had hidden and sealed the cave. (Joshua 10:16-27)  Afterwards, Joshua and his army attacked and defeated all of the surrounding kingdoms until he had subdued the entire region from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza and from Goshen to Gibeon. (Joshua 10:28-43)

Application

There are those who do not believe that God stopped the movement of the entire universe for a day. The Bible records that Jesus, The Christ, said “… with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26 and Mark 10:27)  God is all powerful.  He created the heavens and the earth out of nothing by speaking them into existence. (Genesis 1:1-19)  He also parted the Red Sea and allowed the children of Israel to cross it on dry land, (Exodus 14:21-22) and then drowned Pharoah’s army in it when they attempted to pursue them. (Exodus 14:26-30)  Nothing is impossible for God. (Jeremiah 32:17)  He can fight our battles if we only believe.

PEOPLE WILL LIE TO YOU

Proclamation

“And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, ‘We be come from a far country; now therefore make ye a league with us.”  Joshua 9:6 (KJV)

Explanation

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After hearing about what the Israelites had done to Jericho and Ai, all of the kings west of the Jordan joined forces to wage war against Israel.  However, the Gibeonites decided to resort to deception.  They pretended that they were from a far away country and had travelled a great distance.  They dressed the part and Joshua fell for the hoax.  They did not go to The Lord in prayer prior to making the agreement with the Gibeonites. (Joshua 9:14-15)  Three days later the Israelites learned that they had been fooled and that the Gibeonites were their neighbors.  Israel did not attack them but made them wood cutters and water carriers in service to the whole assembly. (Joshua 9:16-26)

Application

We should pray about all things, large or small.  In fact, we ought to always pray and pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)  Bad things happen to us when we get involved in something without first going to God in prayer.  The Bible teaches us not to put our trust in man for in him there is no hope. (Psalm 146:3)  Man will lie to us, deceive us, beguile us, take advantage of us, and lead us astray and therefore man is not to be trusted.  We should trust in The Lord and not even in our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)  It is much better to put our trust in The Lord than in man. (Psalm 118:8)  We will go much farther with God than we will with man. (Isaiah 40:31)

DO IT AGAIN THE RIGHT WAY THIS TIME

Proclamation:

“And The Lord said unto Joshua, ‘Fear not, neither be thou dismayed; take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai;  See, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land.’ ”  Joshua 8:1 (KJV)

Explanation:

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  The first time that Joshua led the Israelites against the army at Ai, The Lord God was not with them because they had sinned and broken their covenant with Him. (Joshua 7:11-12)  The first time, Joshua listened to his spies and did not speak to The Lord God.  The second time Joshua prayed, listened to God, and followed God’s plan when he attacked Ai.  The Lord God had to encourage Joshua because the Israelites had been routed by Ai the first time they fought them.  This time, Joshua had renewed his commitment to The Lord God, and this time he was going to do it the right way, God’s way.

Application:

All too often we do things our way, without going to The Lord God in prayer first.  The Bible teaches us that we should pray about everything. (Matthew 21:22 and Luke 21:36)  We need to show our love for The Lord God with our life and our lifestyle.  Jesus, The Christ, said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)  And, if we love Him, then we should not be afraid to step out on faith and do what He says do. (1 John 4:18)  We should not let the fear of failure, or the fear of rejection, cause us to stop doing something God’s way.  Even if we failed the first time, let’s do it again but do it the right way this time.  Let’s do it God’s way.  Let us not go into battle unprepared.  Let us pray first, then let us put on the whole armor of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18)  If we do it His way, the victory is ours. (1 Corinthians 15:57)

GOD PUNISHES HIS PEOPLE FOR DISOBEDIENCE

Proclamation:

“Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them; for they have taken of the accursed thing … Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies … neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.”  Joshua 7:11-12 (KJV)

Explanation:

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  The Lord God told the Israelites not to keep any of the spoils from Jericho after they took the city.  The precious metals were to go into the treasury of The Lord. (Joshua 6:18-19)  But Achan, from the tribe of Judah, took some of them for himself and this angered The Lord God. (Joshua 7:1)  So when they went to war against the army of Ai, God was not with them and they were routed. (Joshua 7:4)  Afterwards, Joshua asked God why they lost and what were they to do? (Joshua 7:6-9)  The Lord God told him that Israel had sinned and violated His covenant.  Then Joshua examined the people, tribe by tribe, clan by clan, family by family, and man by man, until Achan was found and admitted what he had done. (Joshua 7:16-21)  They gathered all that he had taken, and his family, and his animals, and all that he owned and took them to the Valley of Achor.  There they stoned him, and them, and then burned them all. (Joshua 7:22-26)

Application:

Don’t play with The Lord God.  Don’t say that you are a believer, and then go about and act like a non-believer.  When we sin, we need to confess and ask to be forgiven.  We should not try to hide it as if God can’t see it.  We should search ourselves, our hearts, and our homes to make sure that we are not harboring something which The Lord God abhors, or holding back something which should be given to Him.  Unrepentant sin can not only bring God’s wrath down upon the individual sinner, but also upon his children, his grand-children, and on their children. (Numbers 14:18)   One fine day, all that we thought, said, and did will be judged, it will all pass through the fire of judgment.  All of it that gives God glory will pass through the fire, and we will be rewarded for it.  However, everything else will be burned up and we will suffer a loss, but we ourselves will be saved. (1 Corinthians 3:11-15)  Let us do all that we can to the glory of God.  When we pray, let us ask to be forgiven for sins of omission as well as sins of commission in addition to our sinful thoughts, words, and deeds.

GREAT OBSTACLES FOR MAN ARE NO PROBLEM FOR GOD

Proclamation:

“So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so every man straight before him, and they took the city.”  Joshua 6:20 (KJV)

Explanation:

These are the words of God which were written by Joshua under the influence of The Holy Spirit of God.  After they crossed the Jordan River, the Israelites proceeded to Jericho.  The walls of Jericho were a formidable obstacle. (Joshua 6:1)  However, Joshua listened to The Lord God, (Joshua 6:2-5) and he obeyed Him.  The priests and the men marched around the city of Jericho seven times.  When the priest blew their trumpets the people shouted and the walls of Jericho collapsed. (Joshua 6:6-20)  The Israelites entered the city and destroyed every living thing within the city (Joshua 6:21) except for Rahab and her family who were in her house. (Joshua 6:22-23)  Rahab’s house, which was built into part of the wall around the city, (Jericho 2:15) was left standing when the walls collapsed. (Joshua 6:22-23)  They took the silver, gold brass, and iron from the city and burnt up everything else. (Joshua 6:24)  Rahab and her family were spared because of the kindness she had shown to the two spies Joshua had sent to scout out the city earlier. (Joshua 6:25)  Then Joshua cursed the city and anyone who tried to rebuild it in the future. (Joshua 6:26)

Application:

In our lives today, everything is not always smooth sailing.  At times we run into obstacles, or roadblocks, or mountains that are too steep for us to climb.  Whatever the problem is that hinders us, it is not a problem for The Lord God.  Fortresses which stand before us can be torn down.  God is omnipotent, and with Him all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26 and Mark 10:27)  We just need to pray, listen to The Lord, and then obey Him and do what He says for us to do.  If we believe in Him, and have faith in Him, He will take care of our obstacles and enemies.  If we trust in The Lord, He will give us something to shout about.
