Believers Who Mourn Will Be Comforted And Blessed

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."  Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

This is the second of the beatitudes which Jesus taught to His disciples, and the surrounding crowd, in His Sermon on The Mount, as recorded by the Apostle Matthew.  He said believers who mourn will be blessed and comforted.

At the death of a loved one we mourn.  We grieve because we feel that someone has been taken away from us.  We should be able to say as Job said
, The Lord gives to us and The Lord takes away from us, blessed be The Lord. (Job 1:21)  We know that when a believer dies, they are absent from the body and present with The Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6 and 5:8)  We mourn, we weep, and we cry because we are human and we have suffered a loss.  We know that in this life there is a time for everything, including a time to mourn and weep. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)  Believers also know that weeping may endure for a season, but joy is coming. (Psalms 30:5)  He will comfort us while we mourn, and bless us during and after the time of mourning. (John 14:16 and 2 Corinthians 1:4)

Mourn Then Move On

"Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them.  They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of The LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword."  2 Samuel 1:11-12 (NIV)

David mourned the death of King Saul, who had become his enemy, and the death of Saul's son Jonathan, his best friend whom he loved.  He did nothing but mourn, weep, and fast for a period, then he moved on and got busy.

It is okay to mourn and cry because of the death of a family member, friend, or loved one.  That is a natural and normal human behavior.  We will always remember our deceased friends and loved ones, they will forever be a part of our lives.  However, we are not to stay forever in a dysfunctional state of mourning because of any ones death.   A day may not be long enough for a period of mourning, but a year is too long.  There comes a time when it is time to resume our place in society.  Death is a part of life.  Death is something that we will all experience, unless we are alive when the rapture occurs.  Remember, to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6-10)  Trust in The Lord.

Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."  Matthew 5:4 (NIV)
Jesus Christ said this as part of His Sermon on The Mount.  He was speaking to His disciples and the multitude that had gathered around Him.

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die ... a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn ... a time to embrace ... a time to love ... and a time for peace."  Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NIV)  Jesus said "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted" (Matthew 5:4), but you have to read the Bible to find out how He does it.  The Lord is the one who comforts us. (Isaiah 49:13)  He comforts all who mourn. (Isaiah 61:2)  There is comfort in His word (Psalms 119:52), in His promise (Psalms 119:50), and in His unfailing love. (Psalms 119:76)  God comforts us through the angels that He sends to talk to us. (Zechariah 1:13)  He also comforts us so that we can provide comfort to others. (2 Corinthians 1:6)  So as you mourn, know that you will be blessed and comforted.

Comfort For Those Who Mourn

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

The second of the Beatitudes that Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount addresses those who grieve and mourn. This suggests that God knows who is grieving and why, and He will comfort them.

The death of a loved one, though not the only cause, is the most common cause for people to mourn. Even for Christians, who should be celebrating the home going of a loved one, still mourn their death. Intellectually, we know that "to be absent from the body ... present with The Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8), but our emotions get the best of us and we mourn. We know that "... blessed are the dead which die in The Lord ... they ... rest from their labours" (Revelation 14:13), and we know that "Precious in the sight of The Lord is the death of His saints." (Psalms 116:15). Mourning is a natural human emotion. We cannot stop someone from mourning, but with the help of God, we can be there for them to comfort them. Be sure that you pray before you speak to someone who is mourning.
