PROCLAMATION
“Jesus saith unto them,
‘Fill the waterpots with water’; and they filled them up to the brim. And
He saith unto them, ‘Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.’ And they bear it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the
water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was; but the servants … knew; the
governor of the feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto him, ‘… thou hast kept
the good wine until now.’ ” John 2:7-10
(KJV)
EXPLANATION
These words are from the
gospel, the good news regarding Jesus, The Christ, according to the Apostle John and written under the
influence of The Holy Spirit of God. Here, John records the first
public miracle which Jesus, The Christ, performed. (John 2:11) Jesus and
His disciples had been invited to a wedding at Cana in Galilee. His
mother was also there. (John 2:1-2) During the celebration His mother
told Him, “They have no more wine.” Then she told the servants to do
whatever Jesus told them to do. (John 2:3-5) The servants filled the six
large stone jars with water as Jesus had directed. They drew some
out and took it to the master of the banquet. Jesus changed the
water into wine without doing or saying anything. The master of the
banquet told the bridegroom that everyone else brings out the choice wine
first. Then they bring out the cheaper wine after the guests have
had too much to drink. But he said that the bridegroom had saved the
best wine for last. (John 2:6-10) What Jesus did at the wedding
banquet was the first of many signs which He would perform through which He
would reveal His glory so that people would believe in Him. (John 2:11) After this Jesus and His disciples went to
Capernaum and then to Jerusalem. He went
to the temple there and drove out the people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,
saying that His Father’s house was not a marketplace. (John 2:12-16)
APPLICATION
The first point here
is that the mother of Jesus gave the servants some very good advice, which
would also apply to us today, “Do whatever He tells you.” (John
2:5) The best thing that we can do today is to obey The Word of God.
The second point is that we are just like those large empty stone water
jars; we need to be filled to the brim with “the living water” from The Word of
God. The third point is that the miracle did not occur until after the
servants drew out some “water” and gave it to the master of the banquet.
When we share The Word of God with others, the change, or “the miracle” will
happen in the lives of those who receive it. We are not to keep The Word
of God to ourselves; we are to share it with others so that they may benefit
from its truth and its saving grace. If we obey Him, The Lord God can use
us to be a blessing to others.
