PROCLAMATION
“And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood
twelve years … When she heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched
His garment. For she said, ‘If I may
touch but His clothes, I shall be made whole.’
And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; … And Jesus, immediately … said, ‘Who
touched My clothes?’ … But the woman fearing and trembling … came and fell down
before Him, and told Him all the truth. And
He said unto her, ‘Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; Go in peace,
and be whole of thy plague.’ ” Mark 5:25-34 (KJV)
EXPLANATION
These words are from the gospel, the good news
regarding Jesus, The Christ, according to Mark, a companion Simon Peter. (1
Peter 5:13) After He had calmed the storm on the lake, (Mark 4:39) Jesus
and His disciples went across the lake, the Sea of Galilee, to the region of
Gerasenes. When they got out of the boat, a strong man who was possessed
by an impure spirit came from the tombs and fell on his knees in front of Jesus
and He healed him. (Mark 5:1-20) Then Jesus again crossed over the lake
by boat and again a large crowd gathered around Him. (Mark 5:21) One
person from the crowd Jairus, one of the synagogue leaders, came and fell at
His feet and asked Him to come and heal his sick daughter who was dying.
Jesus went with him and a large crowd followed Him. (Mark 5:21-24) As He
was going to Jairus’ house, the woman with an issue of blood for twelve years
pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of His garment and she was
healed. When she told Jesus the truth
about what she had done, He said, “… Thy faith hath made thee whole …” (Mark
5:25-34) While Jesus was speaking to
her, someone from Jairus’ house came to them saying that his daughter had died. Jesus told Jairus, “Be not afraid, only
believe.” And He took only Peter, James,
and John with Him to Jairus’ house. (Mark 5:35-37) When they arrived Jesus told the crowd of
wailers that the girl was not dead but asleep.
They laughed at Him and He put them all out of the house. He took the child’s mother and father, and
the three disciples with Him into the child’s room. Jesus took the twelve year old little girl’s
hand and called her by name. And
immediately she got up and began to walk.
Jesus told them not to tell anyone about this, then He told them to give the girl something to eat. (Mark 5:38-43)
APPLICATION
Miracles, including healing, still happen
today for those who believe and have faith. If we had mustard seed size
faith, we could move mountains. (Matthew 17:20 and Luke 17:6) However, it
is unfortunate that today many individuals who claim to have the spiritual gift
of healing are just deceiving people. Modern medicine provides benefits
to a large number of people. But doctors do not actually heal their patients,
they treat them. Healing is a divine process which we try to
facilitate. All healing, physical, psychological, and spiritual, comes
from above.
