PROCLAMATION
“And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she
judged Israel at that time.” Judges 4:4
(KJV)
EXPLANATION
These
are the words of God which were written under the influence of The Holy Spirit
of God by the Prophet Samuel. After the
judge Ehud died, the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of The
Lord. (Judges 4:1) So The Lord allowed
them to be taken by Jabin king of Canaan. (Judges 4:2) After they had been cruelly oppressed for
twenty years, the children of Israel again cried unto The Lord and He sent
Deborah the prophetess to judge them and lead them. (Judges 4:3-5) She sent for and told Barak to take ten
thousand men and fight Jabin’s army. But
he said that he would not go unless she went with him. (Judges 4:6-8) She agreed to go with him and together they
defeated their enemy. (Judges 4:9-16)
However, Sisera the captain of Jabin’s army fled on foot and hid in the tent
of Jael wife of Heber the Kenite. (Judges 4:15-17) She hid him, and then she killed him as he
slept. (Judges 4:18-24)
APPLICATION
It is clearly presented in this chapter that The Lord
God spoke to and used a woman to carry out His will. He sent Deborah to judge and lead Israel.
(Judges 4:4) Today there are a number of
women who have been called of God to preach the gospel, to spread His Holy
Word, and to lead local churches. It is
not our place to judge whom The Lord calls.
Each of us was created for a purpose (Romans 9:11, Ephesians 1:11, and 2
Timothy 1:9) and one day we will each have to give an account of our
stewardship. (Luke 16:2) Those who teach
and preach will be judged and held to a higher standard. Those who are called to lead and watch over
God’s people must also give an account of the souls under their charge.
(Hebrews 13:17)
