OBEY AND PROSPER DISOBEY AND BE DESTROYED

PROCLAMATION
“After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.  They abandoned the temple of The Lord, The God of their ancestors, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols.  Because of their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem.”  2 Chronicles 24:17-18 (NIV)

EXPLANATION
Joash son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, was not killed because his aunt Jehosheba hid him from his grandmother, Queen Athaliah, who went on a royal family killing rampage after her son was killed. (2 Kings 11:1-3 and 2 Chronicles 22:10-12)  Jehosheba hid him in the temple for six years.  After that time, Jehoiada the high priest made a covenant with the commanders of the army and the leaders of Israel to end the bloody reign of Queen Athaliah and crown little Joash king of Judah and Israel. (2 Chronicles 23:1-3)  Jehoiada gave orders to the priests and Levites and positioned them to guard the temple and protect Joash as they anointed him and proclaimed him king. (2 Chronicles 23:4-11)  After the queen was put to death, the king was moved from the temple to the royal palace to sit on the throne. (2 Chronicles 23:12-21)  Joash was seven years old when he became king and he reigned for forty years.  He did that which was right in the eyes of The Lord until Jehoiada the priest died. (2 Chronicles 24:1-2)  He even rebuilt the temple of The Lord. However, after the priest died, Joash abandoned the ways of The Lord God and began to worship idols. (2 Chronicles 24:15-18)  The Lord sent prophets to the people, but they would not listen to them. (2 Chronicles 24:19-21)  Then The Lord allowed them to be attacked, invaded, captured, and their leaders to be killed. (2 Chronicles 24:23-27)

APPLICATION
Things may not always go the way that we want them to go, but if we follow the ways of The Lord God and keep His commandments, He will protect us, provide for us, bless us, and allow us to prosper. (Psalm 1:1-3)  If we do not follow His ways, and if we turn our back on Him, then we will be treated like the wicked, non-believing sinners of the world and we will be punished. (Psalm 1:4-6)  While we are fellowshipping with the righteous, doing His will and following the influence of godly men, we will be blessed.  When we allow ungodly worldly influences to control us, we will fall into the sinful behavior and may become stuck with our reprobate mind. (Romans 1:28)  We all fall down, but we don’t have to stay down. (Luke 15:18)  We just need to recognize that we need God’s help to get up, to walk the right way, along the narrow road, (Matthew 7:14) if we are to turn from our wicked ways. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
